Carefully Carefree

This column analyses some of the tricky issues in the cosmetics industry and describes user experiences from a male point of view. By Ilja Hakala

Mostly, men only get better with age and passing years, and . restraint, prudence and looking after oneself no longer seem wimpy. Those of us who had our thirties’ crisis before the Y2K-crisis now find ourselves oddly intrigued by the changes in our skin. We can look on our creases and wind-corrugated furrows as the passing of youth or as quiet signs of our maturing masculinity.

Every morning we wake up to examine our faces for the marks left by the night before. These days, all-nighters are no longer needed to make us resemble a raccoon in the mornings. But, do not poke at your black under-eye rings or puffy bags with any old product. The wife’s lotions may be too greasy and the end result can at worst be something between a nocturnal animal and the outcome of a 12-round boxing match. Although no product can remove all shades of black and purple, the worst bumps can be evened out.

The Armani Skin Minerals series eye contour cream makes your mornings brighter. Its volcanic minerals, sheathed in a black jar, seem comfortingly masculine even on a conceptual level. Armani’s Eye Master is refreshingly gel-like and feels rejuvenating. The worst puffiness and signs of tiredness are halved in 20 minutes. Age and experience look better when your vision isn’t impaired, at least.
