Nevsky Centre shopping mall is located in the very heart of Saint Petersburg, at the corner of Nevsky prospect and Vosstaniya Street, in ancient houses built in early 19th century.
Three-floor building of classical style, 114 Nevsky Prospect, belonged to a merchant Semyanov. It persisted in its original form until the beginning of 20th century.
At various times, the building housed “Today” newspaper office, “Shelter & Giesecke” factory office specialized in lifting machines with switchboard systems, board of “Samolyot” insurance company and various stores. It was for trading activities that the facade of the building got slightly modernized in 1909-1910: small-sized ground-floor windows were replaced with wide shop windows.
At the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Vosstaniya (former Znamenskaya) street, there was located a two-story house owned by merchant F. Menyaev. During the century, it was reconstructed several times: it was gradually rebuilt, upper floors were erected, and facades were decorated. Early in 20th century, the building was occupied by “Hermitage” hotel, later renamed as “Du Nord”, and in the 1930s as “Severnaya”. The building also housed the agency of Arthur Coppel joint-stock company, “Znamenskoye” artificial mineral waters outlet, dental clinic, G. Brachman & Co. trade house and several shops.
Copyright Agency functioned here until recently. The ground floor was occupied by the art shop“Heritage” that had been established in 1980th by the Leningrad Cultural Fund.
By the end of the 20th century, the buildings were in desperate need of renovation.
