Light and versatile grilled delicacies

Grilling is the high point of the summer, a time of easy camaraderie and enjoyable food. The whole meal can be easily cooked on the grill. At its best, grilled food makes for versatile and light summer meals.

Grilling is light

This summer, it's worth trying new, lighter tastes in grilled foods. Grilling as such is already a light way of cooking, and when high-quality, low-fat meat and a generous amount of fresh vegetables are selected, everyone can enjoy grilled foods all summer with no worries – and no compromises on taste.

Invest in quality meat

Meaty and light grilled delicacies are naturally made with tender, low-fat, unseasoned meat. Select beef, lamb, or pork as steaks or whole fillets or unseasoned chicken and turkey meat. Patties of low-fat ground beef are also delicious when grilled and tasty with vegetables or between a hamburger.

Light variety with fish

Fish is quickly cooked on the grill. An easy way to grill fish is to cook it wrapped in foil as such or with potatoes and vegetables, for example. A gridiron is a useful tool for grilling fish, because fish easily breaks into pieces when turned.

Prawns and scampi tails, together with vegetables, make impressive kebabs. Vegetarian kebabs can be created with tofu or a firm cheese, such as halloumi.

Seasoning for juiciness

Seasoning adds taste and juiciness to grilled foods. Marinades can be made lighter by decreasing the amount of oil – the less oil in a marinade, the less energy. The lightest marinades are based on water, juice, or yogurt. Spices can also be rubbed directly on the surface of the meat or fish.

Grilled foods can also be cooked unseasoned and spiced according to taste with various sauces at the table. Strong and savoury sauces go well with meat, whereas sauces based on curds, yogurt, or sour cream are light and delicious.

The plate model works in the summer, too

A tasty and satisfying meal is easy to create with grilled foods by filling half of the plate with vegetables. Almost all vegetables, such as bell peppers, carrots, zucchinis, eggplants, corn-cobs, asparagus, and onions, are suitable for grilling either as such or on a kebab. Vegetables and mushrooms are also delicious when cooked in a foil bundle, and roasting vegetables on a lightly oiled gridiron makes for tasty warm side dishes for grilled meat.

In addition to grilled vegetables, also refreshing salads or other fresh seasonal vegetables, for example with a light dip sauce, provide a nice complement to the meal. And since the grill is hot, you can bake foccaccia-style bread on a big pan or toast bread plain, or with a dash of oil.

Sweet desserts

Dessert can also be made on the grill. Fruits, grilled as such or wrapped in a foil bundle, finish off the meal nicely and are easy to cook in the residual heat of the grill. A fresh dessert can be made with bananas, pineapples, mangoes, nectarines, pears, apples, or papayas. Firm strawberries and pieces of cantaloupe or honeydew melon can also be grilled. For new taste sensations, season the fruit with various flavoured syrups, balsamic vinegar, or a dash of rum or fruit liqueur. For a festive touch, top off your grilled dessert with ice cream or vanilla sauce.
